HEB Engineers, Inc. has been named the 2026 Coolest Employer for Young People by Stay Work Play New Hampshire. HEB is one of only two companies in New Hampshire to receive this award twice, having previously won in 2011.

Each year, Stay Work Play NH, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting young people’s personal and professional growth in the Granite State, honors a New Hampshire organization that creates an exceptional environment to attract and retain young workers. HEB stood out among applicants from across the state for its community-focused culture, supportive benefits, and commitment to work-life balance, all of which help bring talented young professionals to the North Country.

“I love when people get to see what we’re building here at HEB,” said Josh McAllister, who started working at the firm in 2004 and was elected President earlier this year. “This is also a win for the Mt. Washington Valley. We need to show young people this area isn’t just for tourists - you can find a rewarding career, put down roots, and access an incredible quality of life in our corner of the White Mountains.”

Founded in 1974, HEB employs nearly 50 people between its North Conway and Bridgton, ME offices. The firm specializes in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Land Surveying, and Support Services for clients in Northern New England, with projects ranging from municipal bridges and roadways to site development and recreation trails. Over 65 percent of staff members are under 40, and several senior-level staff members have spent most of their careers at the company.

HEB’s culture is grounded in employee empowerment, community service, and flexibility so that team members can prioritize their responsibilities and passions outside of work. HEB’s competitive benefits package includes participation in the Employee Stock Ownership Plan, an initial 24 days of PTO, 24 hours of paid professional development time, and 16 hours of paid volunteer time. The flexible scheduling policy allows employees to adjust their 40-hour work week around their own calendars, with some employees working four 10-hour days, starting early or leaving early for school pick-up, or reducing hours during a sports season to coach a local team. Employees can also work remotely to plan around personal and family needs.

To share the spirit of community involvement and social responsibility, the firmwide “HEB Cares” program combines sponsorships, service, and technical support to assist organizations that align with employees’ values. In 2025, HEB collectively dedicated over 300 volunteer hours and contributed over $61,000 in sponsorships and technical grants to local organizations. HEB encourages employees to further extend their impact by serving on nonprofit boards. Staff members currently sit on boards for Androscoggin Valley Hospital, Mount Washington Valley Housing Coalition, Granite Backcountry Alliance, the North Conway Community Center, Inclusive Ski Touring, and Mt. Washington Valley Eaters & Growers.
