Valley Cross Road Bridge Rehabilitation Complete in Jackson, NH

Construction on the Valley Cross Road Bridge in Jackson, NH has officially wrapped up, marking the completion of a project that blended critical infrastructure upgrades with meaningful historic preservation. HEB Engineers was proud to provide Construction Administration services for this important effort, working closely with the Town of Jackson, the Engineer-of-Record, and Austin Construction, Inc.

Project Background

The original picturesque bridge crossing Wildcat River was 70 feet long by 16 feet wide and included a narrow sidewalk area along the southern side. The bridge consisted of a timber deck supported by steel beams on top of concrete abutments and featured historical “low parker” trusses estimated to date back to 1905. These trusses were non-structural but visually significant. Over time, the steel beams rusted, the sidewalk became unsafe, and the narrow 16-foot bridge width necessitated improvements.

The Town of Jackson recognized the need for a full rehabilitation that would bring the bridge up to modern safety standards while honoring its historic significance.

Rehabilitation Scope and Highlights

The completed project includes the construction of a new steel girder bridge with a cast-in-place concrete deck supported by upgraded concrete abutments faced with intricate stone work. The new design widens the roadway to improve vehicle and pedestrian access while retaining a sidewalk along the southern side.

To preserve the character of the historic bridge, the project included:

  • Refurbishment and reinstallation of the original low parker trusses
  • Recreation of ornate pedestrian railings that echo the original design
  • Installation of a historical placard to mark the significant milestone in the bridge’s lifespan.
