HEB Begins Final Design of WOW Trail Phase II

HEB’s Civil Group is moving into final design activities of Phase II of the Laconia Winnipesaukee-Opechee-Winnisquam (WOW) Trail.  The second phase of the multi-use recreational pathway will extend the existing 1.3 miles of Phase I trail construction in central Laconia south to the Belmont/Laconia town line.  Phase II will continue within the railroad right-of-way from the former train station (except utilizing the existing wide sidewalk along the Fair St. Bridge).  Phase II will connect with another existing trail beginning near the Belmont Town line.  Phase I of the WOW Trail was the first such rail with trail constructed along an active rail line in New
Hampshire.

Phase II of the pathway will consist of 1.1 miles of scenic trail and will include a small bridge over Durkee Brook in addition to several sections of boardwalk to minimize impacts to existing drainage courses and wetlands.  Phase II of the trail will be 10’-wide for the majority of its length and be constructed with a paved surface. Final design activities will continue through the winter, with construction expected to begin in the Fall of 2014.
