Originally constructed in 1931, the Bemis Bridge on the Davis Path spanned approximately 108 feet between cable support towers with an additional 50-foot approach span. The Appalachian Mountain Club engaged HEB to perform an inspection, analysis, and report containing recommendations for upgrade.
In 1999, the Town of Harts Location received a National Scenic Byways Grant to replace the bridge. HEB was then engaged to design a new bridge, a 168-foot-span asymmetric cable stay bridge. This bridge is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States. It provides improved hydraulics, handicap accessibility, safe pedestrian travel and is aesthetically pleasing in its environment. Construction cost was $230,000.
